Armitage Gone! Dance “Variety Show”

Posted in Dance with tags on May 3, 2012 by seatfiller

What I saw last night. Armitage Gone! Dance at the Abrons Arts Center Playhouse Theater. In the first part a man’s head is illuminated inside a frame. There is a tiny apartment with a chair, a phone, a light etc. The human head trapped in this tableau discusses parties and eventually breaks free. The next piece William Wegman has his Weinmaraner clothed and seated above mannequin legs with human arms behind him. Dancers of various  styles interacts and dances with him while the dog remains largely unconcerned. After that a scantily clad all girl band is preparing to behead a woman. She calls for the Candyman who arrives firing a gun and wearing a loin cloth with nothing underneath. He takes over lead singing duties in a very Rocky Horror style. There was also a fan dance and some ballet and finally a long piece with a load of people that have been painted red green or blue. They look like early arrivers at the Coney Island Mermaid parade. There is much posing and some of the paint begins to sweat away.

Elements: nudity, body paint, singing, live music, gun, sword, chair, dog, talking, small room in a frame, etc.

Barcelona Ballet

What I saw last night. Barcelona Ballet at City Center. Angel Corella’s company returns with three pieces. The first was probably the best and most traditional of ballets. Lots of V formations and duets. The second one was for 4 men and was originally made for the Kings of dance. Considering those works are usually full of stunts to show off the “king’s” abilities this one was not so bad. The final piece was just insane. There were matadors acting like a gang, bare chested miners with lanterns. Women in lace cat suits that made off with the lanterns. Courtesans lounging on chairs and couches. Break away dresses. A soundtrack of every type of music imaginable. It was like watching the highlights from many shows done as a montage.

Elements: chairs, couches, fans, feathers, lanterns

What I saw last night. Faye Driscoll at the Kitchen. A duet. A man and woman stand on a pedestal wearing loads of clothing and holding as much random stuff as possible. For 90 minutes they escalate the amount of props they interact with creating s bigger mess as feathers, powder and paint fly about. There is yelling and crying and riding on each others backs while oranges and such are stuffed down their pants. A long messy night.

Elements: clothes, oranges, grapes, furs, knife, talcum powder, red dye, yellow paint, hair brush, glasses, feathered boas, etc.
