What I saw last night. Balkan Express at Dixon Place. A trio of choreographers from the Balkans present an evening of work.  This is my favorite venue not only because it has a bar but also because you are allowed to bring your drinks to your seats. The first piece was by Ivo Dimchev who I just saw last in March. A completely different work by him although it does involve cutting himself and having blood trail down his face and the previous show had him drawing blood with a needle. Always a powerful image to bleed for your art but everything that led up to it was successful as well. Fave parts included reciting the lyrics to Kenny Rodgers “The Gambler” and pleading/screaming at his porcelain cat to please eat. You kind of need to be there.Second piece was a straight forward solo dance performed by Ursula Eagle. She made her hands look like hooves and wore a slip dress.

The final piece was a folly. Five people sit in chairs facing the audience and stare at them/us. They go on to mumble to each other and point at people in the crowd. The reality is that the majority of the crowd is made up of artists, choreographers, presenters etc. They are very jaded about this kind of work which is overly literal. In no time things became confrontational as the audience members started pointing out some of the obvious elements of attempting to turn the tables on the viewer. At one point a film is projected of the audience which I have seen done before more successfully only with dogs as the performers and the audience being filmed looking agitated as they feel they are being hoodwinked. Well having drinks helped on this night.

Scott Heron & HIJACK

What I saw last night. Scott Heron & HIJACK at Dixon Place.  It started with a woman completely covered in denim moving slowly like a glacier made of clothes. Then a man is seen strapped to a table undergoing some kind of a procedure involving crutches, hairnets and ace bandages while covering his private areas with a baseball mitt. Then it gets strange. There is a great deal of histrionics and they throw almost everything at the wall. Some of it sticks.

Elements: denim, table, ladder, nudity, rope, dry ice, inflatable animals, spoken word, shopping cart, etc.

Maja Delak and Luka Princic

What I saw last night. Maja Delak & Luka Princic at Dixon Place. One of my favorite venues since the place has a bar and you can bring your drink to the show.

The show. A couple wrestles, slap each other hard, dress and undress, sing, falate a microphone, play guitar and so forth. A rather dysfunctional relationship. I have seen most of this kind of thing before but the performers are from Slovenia so it is interesting that their experimental material is similar to what was already done in New York.

Elements: TV, video, singing, nudity, sugar cubes, chair, laptops, spoken word etc.

Niles Ford/Urban Dance Collective

What I saw last night. Niles Ford/Urban Dance Collective at Dixon Place. Finally a venue with a decent bar. I know Lincoln Center and many of the Broadway theaters have drinks available but this is much better. I had a hot toddy and the money went to the survival of the theater.

The show was billed as a danceumentary. Nuff said, lots of video. A dozen or more dancers crowded the stage at various points. Still it was interesting to see voguing and club dance so soon after Trajal Harrell’s show. I never noticed how so many of the poses look identical to martial arts positions.

Elements: disco ball, film, voice over, perfume
