Xenakis & Japan

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on March 1, 2010 by seatfiller

What I saw last night. “Xenakis & Japan” at the Judson Church. Iannis Xenakis was a composer greatly influenced by Japanese culture so choreographer Luca Veggetti created works with dancers from Purchase College and Noh theater performer Ryoko Aoki.

The performance consisted of many lifts and tilts and more standing still. Many wore transparent tops and the perimeter of the stage was strung with fluorescent light tubes that exploded when stepped on inadvertently by audience members there by delaying the production. Hopefully none of the dancers got glass in their feet.

Elements: fluorescent lights, live music, transparent women’s tops
Titles: “Concert PH” “Orient-Occident” “Theraps” “Hibiki-Hana-Ma” and “Shigure”

Anarchist Book Fair

What I went to three days ago. The Anarchist Book Fair at the Judson Church. img_0391This was a rather damp affair where everyone seemed to be eating very dry looking (vegan) brownies and oily salads. All the tables seemed to sell the exact same books and nobody had “the anarchist cookbook” which seems to me a must for such an event. Anyway it was an excuse really to meet a friend downtown for drinks so I was not really put off when having a look.

Lori Belilove & The Isadora Duncan Dance Company

What I saw last night. Lori Belilove & The Isadora Duncan Dance Company at the Judson Church. img_03351I was instructed by one of my few commenters to go see this event and so I have. She was correct in stating this would be a more “full meal after the appetizer at DNA” It also is a venue with more bizarre signage. img_02061What meeting required this sign to be created? img_0336More worrying is what Hemingway wrote this missive for the bathroom stall.

Elements: voice over, children, flowing garments, live piano

Marten Spangberg

What I saw last night. Marten Spangberg at Judson Memorial Church. Again. A continuation of Movement Research Fall Festival 2008: Sidewinder. On the stage was a row of chairs. A woman entering late seeing empty chairs took a seat on stage.  That was new.

Shen Wei Dance Arts

What I saw last night. Shen Wei Dance Arts at Judson Memorial Church. It seems like a bit of a climb down from choreographing for the Olympics. Ang Lee was in the audience. My second celebrity sighting in as many shows.
