Australia’s Strange Fruit, Michael Moschen & Streb Extreme Action Company

What I saw last night. Australia’s Strange Fruit, Michael Moschen and Streb Extreme Action Company at the World Financial Center. Summertime is always when I manage to get the best pictures for this site. The darkened theater and black boxes are always the undoing of the Iphone 3 camera no matter what app I use.

The first piece was by Australia’s Strange Fruit. Three women in Victorian garb scale poles. When they reach the top they haul up hoop skirts from the ground. Once firmly secured to pole and skirt they sway about whispering to each other feigning fear and just generally hanging out. Makes for better pictures than action.

The next act was Michael Moschen. A juggler I have not seen perform in over a decade. He stays away from juggling chain saws and axes instead sticking with the traditional balls. He attempted to give a bit of a tutorial while juggling. His big interest seems to be angles, which he demonstrated, in rapid succession in the triangle. The sun was a big hindrance to him and sent some balls astray but he was game for doing something precise in the elements.

Final piece was Streb’s Extreme Action Company. Working off a three level scaffolding “dancers” launched themselves in sequences off the platforms like they were falling into a pool. Except it was just a mat. I have seen them do this stuff before and it always looks on the edge of very painful. By the end several performers had bleeding knees and elbows. They are attempting to emulate the fountains at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. The accompanying “womp” soundtrack when they hit the mat sounds like noise when the water suddenly drops to the surface. This is the most affective piece of the evening.Elements: poles, hoop skirts, triangle, scaffolding

Paul-André Fortier

What I saw last night. Paul-André Fortier at One New York Plaza. Well the notion here is that this man will perform for a half hour rain or shine for 30 days. Apparently he has done so in major cities around the world. In performance he look like Jean-Luc Picard battling unseen foes on the holodeck. I probably have had my fill of Star Trek references here for a while. If it rains I may go have a look at him again.

Yoshiko Chuma & The School of Hard Knocks

What I saw last night. Yoshiko Chuma & The School of Hard Knocks at LentSpace. An outdoor performance during a heatwave on a God Forsaken triangle of “park” near the mouth of the Holland Tunnel never bodes well for someone who prefers to fill a seat than stand in the sun. Things start wittily enough when a limousine brings in the dancers making a sharp contrast to the suffering spectators. From then on the elements pile up as the performers engage in fake fights and anguished pantomimes. They also create lanes with rope and scatter bags of shredded paper. There was no limo for me home afterwards.

Elements: limousine, ropes, tarp, fake fights, buckets, female French horn players, live music, bags of shredded paper

Merce Cunningham Dance Company at Rockefeller Park

What I saw last night. Merce Cunningham Dance Company at Rockefeller Park.Merce Park 1 The first Merce show I have seen since his passing last week. Merce Park 2The rain stopping, clouds parting and suddenly shining sun led many (I overheard) to comment that it was intervention on Merce’s part from the great beyond. I avoid that kind of speculation. Merce Park 3
I saw Jon Stewart and his family on the street after the show on his way home. He was not attending the performance but I like to note these things for myself.

Elements: outside, two stages
